The Technology of Birth – Be Prepared to Choose
Research shows us that the less medical procedures a mom and baby undergo, the better the outcome. The more prenatal visits mom has with her MD, the worse the pregnancy outcome is for mom and baby. We have touched on only a few of the many technologies that you may be presented with during your pregnancy, labor and delivery. If you would like any further information on any of these procedures to help you make an informed decision. Please ask us….
Routine Ultrasound Screening: Studies show U/S does not increase health outcomes for baby or mom and fails to detect up to 69% of congenital problems. Mom’s who have had U/S are more likely to have preterm labor and deliveries and the babies are more likely to have problems such as dyslexia, speech impediments, epilepsy and learning difficulties. There is a quadrupled chance of perinatal death.
Fetal Heart Monitoring: Has been shown to be no help in preventing maternal or infant illness, in fact has been shown to give false positives (says there’s a problem when there isn’t one) 72% of the time, and leads to an increase in C-sections that are unnecessary.
Epidural: This drug does cross the placenta into your baby. The toxicity may cause: low blood pressure, incontinence, paralysis of lower extremities, headache, backache, septic meningitis, slowing of labor, increased need for forceps and vacuum deliveries, cranial nerve palsies, allergic reactions, respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting and seizures. Mom’s should not be scared into feeling they need a drug to make it through what their body’s were naturally made to do.
*Using any drugs for the induction or “enhancement” of labor and delivery is dangerous for mom and baby. Please check out the www.icpa4kids.com website to learn about more of the technologies of birth.
Circumcision: Even the American Academy of Pediatrics no longer supports routine circumcision of boys. The myth that it keeps a boys penis more clean is just that – a myth. This is a multibillion dollar industry which no longer has the research to back the procedure.
Vaccinations: There is much to be said about the dangers of vaccination. Please check out www.909shot.com to research this life changing decision before vaccinating your child.
Birthing Trauma: Possibly, one of the most traumatic events in any of our lives was being introduced into this wonderful world. Very often a “normal” birth uses extreme force to literally pull and pry the newborn infant out of the birth canal. Dr. Abraham Towbin from Harvard Medical School feels that the application of standard procedures during the birthing process may prove harmful to the infant. Furthermore, Dr. Towbin believes that during active labor the spinal column, specifically the cervical spine (neck), may be injured as the fetus is compressed and forced down the birth canal.
Seemingly minor incidents such as slips falls, or minor automobile fender benders are traumatic enough to cause spinal misalignments (subluxations), resulting in nerve interference in adults. It is understandable that the forces incurred during childbirth can cause subluxations in the new born infant.
During the delivery process, tractional or stretching forces of nearly 70 pounds have been recorded. That is approximately 10 times the weight of the infant. To understand the maginitude of that force, imagine lifting a fifty pound bag of feed or cement. Now, can you see the impact that this much weight could have on an infant’s spine? Do you think that this could cause subluxation? A study examining the ability of the newborn’s spine to resist injury from over stretching has shown that a tractional force of 90 pounds was enough to separate and dislocate the veretebrae (bones of the spine), especially in the neck.
It is no surprise that the trauma resulting from these tremendous forces can cause mild to severe soft tissue, spinal cord or brainstem injury, even during so called normal deliveries. The severity of these injuries is increased when there is a difficult labor, a C-section delivery, when forceps are used or when vacuum extraction is used.
To assess the function of the newborn’s nervous system in relation to the affects of nervous interference, the infant should be evaluated as soon as possible by your Chiropractor. The infant should also be evaluated for proper development with regular chiropractic check ups. When this is done, the pediatric patient can be monitored for abnormal functioning caused by subluxations.
In Australia, it is not uncommon to have a Chiropractor on the OB/GYN delivery team. As soon as the child is delivered, and even before the cord is cut, the child is checked for subluxation. If a subluxation is present, the child is gently adjusted before the mother is united with her new child. WOW!
Proper spinal care is essential for your child’s well being and proper development, as well as a healthier life. If you have not had your child checked for subluxation, now is a great time to do so. Children respond favorably to Chiropractic care. It is very gentle and many times does not even disturb a sleeping baby. The human frame, especially the spinal column where 90 percent of nervous system interference occurs, should be maintained throughout your life. If you have not had your own spine checked for subluxation, and you are 40 years old, then you are 40 years too late for your first spinal examination and adjustment.
